This Week: New York House Republicans Vote To Rip Away Health Care, Governor Hochul Continues Fighting for New Yorkers

NEW YORK – This week, as House Republicans voted for a reckless budget proposal that includes hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid, Governor Hochul stood up for New Yorkers and fought back against numerous attacks from Republicans in Washington.

1. Governor Hochul immediately slammed House Republicans following their vote “to rip health care away from up to 1.8 million New Yorkers – all to bankroll giveaways for billionaires,” which every New York House Republican voted for.

Politico: HOCHUL ATTACKS LAWLER ON MEDICAID: The governor has ramped up her criticism of a likely 2026 challenger for governor, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, after the Hudson Valley congressmember voted in favor of a GOP spending plan that will likely include significant cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. [...]

Lawler previously vowed on a Saturday CNN late night show (where he also sang a self-written spoof of the Beach Boys while performing a Trump impression) that he “will not cut Medicaid benefits.”

House Republican Mike Lawler faced intense backlash for his vote to rip away New Yorkers’ health care as he went back on his own word and put Medicaid on the chopping block – even as over a quarter of his constituents rely on the program.

Governor Hochul: “Mike Lawler and his six colleagues in Congress… [are] making sure that we have people in our state without health care — taking away thousands of individuals’, millions of individuals’ right to be able to get chemo treatments and insulin — to be able to get the health care they need.”

2. Governor Hochul also continued to push back against Donald Trump’s power grab and blasted his attempts to declare himself a “king” and rule over New Yorkers.

Governor Hochul: “It's extraordinary to me that the President of the United States, who has a lot of other things on his plate, is focused on the Governor's traffic policies in the City of New York. I mean, go focus on something else. This is for us to determine. This is part of our self determination as states. … you can't overturn it without a fight from me.”

3. Governor Hochul launched a new initiative inviting federal employees to apply for public sector jobs in New York as Donald Trump and Elon Musk continue their reckless rampage to lay off thousands of highly-qualified workers in the federal government.

Governor Hochul: “This administration loves to say, ‘You're fired’ because they think they're living in a game show once again. This is not a silly game called ‘The Apprentice.’ These are real people's lives. … These are the heroes. You know what they get from this administration? Instead of, ‘Thank you for your service,’ they get, ‘You're fired.’ So I said… ‘You're hired.’... We respect public service in our state. We don't denigrate it and treat these people like they're nothing.”
