Governor Andrew Cuomo: “For Mario Cuomo, the purpose of life was clear — to help those in need and leave the world a better place.”

At their delegation breakfast in Philadelphia, the New York State Democrats today honored the progressive leadership and legacy of Governor Mario Cuomo by airing a tribute video that was played inside the Wells Fargo Center this week as part of the 2016 Democratic National Convention. The video includes voiceover excerpts of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s eulogy for his father in January 2015. Mario Cuomo built a long record of success during his three terms as Governor of New York State and rose to national prominence following his keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in 1984.
In the video, Governor Cuomo says: “Fundamentally, my father was very concerned with how people were treated, and that was the arena that eventually drew him in. He was always the son of an immigrant. He was always an outsider, and that was his edge. His spirit lives in all of those outsiders, still living in the shadow of opportunity and still striving for their chance to join the family of New York. He was a man of principle, of honor, of duty, of service. For Mario Cuomo, the purpose of life was clear – to help those in need and leave the world a better place.”
Today under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, New York State is carrying Governor Mario Cuomo’s commitment to progressive values forward. Over the last six years, Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed historic legislation that is leading the nation on some of the most vexing economic and social issues of our time:
  • A $15 statewide minimum wage, boosting the pay of 2.3 million New Yorkers.
  • 12 weeks of paid family leave — the most comprehensive plan in the nation.
  • Marriage equality to ensures everyone is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve
  • Common-sense gun safety laws advanced by Governor Cuomo and passed by a Republican-controlled Senate and Democrat-controlled Assembly
  • Moving forward on $100 billion in infrastructure projects across the state
  • Cutting taxes for middle class families to their lowest rates in 70 years

Over the last several days of the convention, Governor Cuomo has led the New York State Democrats in making clear why Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine are the only candidates with a record of real change and a commitment to championing progressive values for all Americans.
